Over the last 5 or 6 months I have been secretly working away on my Best Customs Contest entry, What is the Best Customs Contest? This blog post will tell you more about that!
The Best Customs Contest (BCC) is a competition held by Breyer Model Horses as part of their Breyerfest Event. Normally the event takes place in Lexington, Kentucky in the USA. However, due to Covid19 it has been a virtual event for 2020 and 2021. Breyerfest is a 3 day Model horse extravaganza, celebrating everything about model horses, from Model Horse Shows, Competitions, Real Horse displays, New Model Horses, Artist sales and much more. The BCC is a big part of Breyerfest for a lot of artists, however previously it has only been open for US residents. This is the first year Breyer have opened it up to the UK and Canada.
The BCC is a customising competition that comprises of different divisions. Artist then work on transforming a Breyer Horse into a finished piece to fit into one of the following divisions:
Finishwork: This focuses on the paintwork on the model
Most Extreme Custom: This focuses on resculpting a Breyer horse and painting it so that it is no longer recognisable as the original model.
Fantasy: Anything Fantasy goes!
Performance: Customising and then photographing a horse with tack, this can be lots of different events, or one.
Theme Class- Classics: Each year the theme class is different, this year it focused on the Classic Scale (1:12) Breyer horses.
So once an artist has created their piece for one of the divisions, they enter it into the Breyerfest competition, then it is a long waiting process to see who Breyer choses as their winners. This year, 3 horses from each division will be the winners. So that is a total of 21 winners out of hundreds of entries. The horses are judges on excellence, so you really have to push yourself to do your best.
